Choices that influence the price of kitchen tiling
Tile prices vary widely and largely determine the total price of kitchen tiling. There are also other factors that influence the price, such as the tiler and any underfloor heating.
Choice 1: Tiles
You have the choice of ceramic tiles or natural stone. Natural stone tiles are formed by the earth from fossilised magma, clay or lime. Ceramic tiles are made in a factory, allowing for a wider range of colours and sizes. Glazed ceramic tiles are the most commonly chosen kitchen tiles as they are water, stain and heat resistant. If you choose another type of tile, have it impregnated. 1 litre of impregnating agent costs £ 35 and can be used to impregnate 20 to 35 m² of tiles, depending on the absorbency of the tiles. The impregnation layer provides the same benefits as the glaze layer. Common prices for tiles are shown below:
Tiles | Price per m² | Exceptions | |
---|---|---|---|
Ceramic tiles | £ 9 – £ 82 | ||
Faience tiles | £ 9 – £ 45 | Wall tile, suitable for the kitchen | |
Faience tiles | £ 13 – £ 65 | Floor tile (can also be used on wall), £ 82 | Needs impregnation |
Natural stone | £ 25 – £ 160 | ||
Slate | £ 25 – £ 160 | Suitable for kitchen | |
Hardstone | £ 30 – £ 160 £ 105 | Suitable for the kitchen | |
Marble | £ 50 – £ 130 | Needs impregnation |
Please note the following differences between floor and wall tiles in the kitchen:
- Floor tiles are sturdier and therefore slightly more expensive than wall tiles.
- Look at the PEI value, which indicates how fast the tile wears. For floor tiles, choose PEI value 3 or higher so that your tiles will stay beautiful for a long time. For wall tiles, PEI value 1 is sufficient, as these tiles are hardly exposed to any load. You can find the PEI value on the tile packaging.
Choice 2: Expert tiler
Are you looking for a tiler? A tiler’s laying fee is between £25 and £40 per m² or per hour. For simple projects, it is also common for the tiler to set one total amount for the complete project in advance. Take advantage of a consultation with the tiler at your home. This costs £50 with most tilers and if you hire that tiler, this amount will be deducted from the total amount.
Choice 3: Underfloor heating
Never cold feet again while cooking, does that sound like a dream? It doesn’t have to be, if you take underfloor heating in your kitchen. By making your underfloor heating the main heating system, you also create more space in your kitchen: the radiator is redundant. Underfloor heating can also serve as additional heating, in which case the radiator remains the main heating. Besides these options, there are two types of underfloor heating: underfloor milling and shrinkage nets. With infreising, the heating pipes are incorporated into the screed. If there is no screed – as in many newly built houses – shrink nets are installed. The pipes are tied to stud plates or steel nets, over which a screed is applied. Get a tiler’s quote for a tiled floor and underfloor heating so you can then decide whether you want it or not. Below are the prices for the different types of underfloor heating:
Number of sqm | Inmilling | Crimp nets | |
---|---|---|---|
Main heating | 10 – 100 | £825 – £2,200 | £850 – £2.650 |
Auxiliary heating | 15 – 150 | £ 825 – £ 2,200 | £ 850 – £ 2,650 |
Choice 4: Additional options
Please also consider the following options to complete the look of your kitchen:
- Special tiling: £ 30 – £ 40 per hour excluding tiles.
- Tile edging: £55 – £90 per m² for materials and tiler.
- Tile skirting: £35 – £50 per m² for materials and tiler.

Frequently asked questions
When choosing wall tiles for the kitchen, you have the choice of several types of tiles. Here, it is important that you choose a tile that you can easily clean as dirt splashes are most likely to occur. An example is ceramic wall tiles.
How high you cover the back wall with tiles is up to you. Many people choose to tile one part and wallpaper, plaster or paint the other. For kitchens, a minimum height of 1.20 metres of tiles is recommended.
A good wall tile is resistant to dirt, moisture and heat, among other things. Consider ceramic tiles, for example. We advise you to get advice on this from a specialist. He or she will look at your project and recommend the best wall tile.
