All the benefits of underfloor heating

Infloor heating provides a lot of extra living comfort. You probably already know some of the benefits of underfloor heating, but maybe not all of them. Find out here what makes underfloor heating so attractive:

  • Warm feet: First, the heat comes from underneath, which is a plus for your feet.
  • More free space: Floor heating is completely invisible. Those big, eye-catching radiators are hardly needed anymore, if at all. As a result, you will enjoy more space in your home.
  • Lower energy bills: The efficiency of underfloor heating is very favourable. Annually, it is possible to save up to 180 m3 of gas. The savings can be as much as £120 a year with a gas price of £0.65.
  • Better for your health: Floor heating uses radiant heat, significantly reducing dust circulation in your home. As a result, the humidity in your home is pieces and the risk of dust mites is zero. Underfloor heating is especially attractive for people with dust allergies.
  • Higher home value: Underfloor heating adds luxury to your home, increasing its value. If you ever sell your home, buyers will often pay extra for underfloor heating in your home.

How does underfloor heating work?

Infloor heating allows an entire room to be heated evenly from the ground up through a piping system for hot water or electricity. The pipes of the piping system are placed under your floor in the form of a spiral. The space between the tubes is 10 to 20 centimetres, depending on the required power. The heat radiation of underfloor heating works as follows:

  1. You set your thermostat to the desired temperature.
  2. Your thermostat transmits a signal to your central heating boiler.
  3. The water pump pumps the hot water around.
  4. The distributor of your underfloor heating ensures an even hot water distribution.
  5. The hot water flows through the pipes and continues circulating so that the desired temperature remains constant.
  6. To prevent damage to your floor, there is a limitation at a maximum of 55 degrees.

This is how to find the best-fit underfloor heating

These three choices are crucial for finding the underfloor heating that best suits your home:

  • Choice 1: underfloor heating as main heating or supplementary heating.
  • Choice 2: underfloor heating milled in or on mats.
  • Choice 3: underfloor heating by hot water or electricity.

Underfloor heating floor

Choice 1. Underfloor heating as main or additional heating

When you have floor heating installed, you have two options to choose from:

  1. Floor heating as main heating.
  2. Floor heating as additional heating

Floor heating is the main heating.

If you choose floor heating as the main heating, your radiators will be redundant, giving you more space in your home. The development of underfloor heating is going fast; the heating time is shorter and shorter, making it easy to use underfloor heating as the only heat source in the room. Delve below into the properties of underfloor heating as main heating and discover the pros and cons.

Properties Explanation
Average cost (per 100 m2) £2,500 – £3,300. Buying underfloor heating as a main heating system is more expensive than supplementary heating, but the efficiency will save you up to £140 a year on your energy bill.
It is a sustainable investment. Thanks to the average heat output of 100 watts/m2, your thermostat can be set 2 or 3 degrees lower on average. This means lower heating costs.
Distance between the pipes is shorter (10 centimetres on average). Because of the short distance between the pipes, you convert energy into heat more efficiently than supplementary heating.
More space in your home. Radiators are unnecessary.
Your home is more attractive. Floor heating is a luxury, making your home attractive to you and future buyers.

Floor heating as additional heating

If you choose underfloor heating as additional heating, your radiators will still be needed to heat the room quickly. You, therefore, often see this type of underfloor heating in smaller rooms in the house, such as the bathroom, toilet or hallway. Look at the properties of underfloor heating as additional heating below and discover the pros and cons.

Properties Explanations
Average cost (per 100 m2) £1,250 – £1.650 Supplementary heating is cheaper than main heating, but underfloor heating, as supplementary heating, is less energy-efficient.
Mostly suitable for smaller rooms in the house. Because less heat comes from underfloor heating as supplementary heating, most people apply this form mainly in smaller rooms. Radiators are required if you want underfloor heating as additional heating in the living room.
Costlier to install. Installing underfloor heating as additional heating is faster than main heating because there is a greater distance between the pipes.
Distance between pipes is greater (15 centimetres on average). The distance between pipes is 5 centimetres greater than for main heating, which means the underfloor heating radiates less heat.

Choice 2. Underfloor heating milled in or on underfloor heating mats

The most common underfloor heating is traditional hot water underfloor heating. This underfloor heating can be installed in two ways:

  1. Infloor heating milling.
  2. Infloor heating on mats.

In-floor heating milling

In-floor heating milling is traditional and ensures fast heating because the pipes are close to the floor. Your floor does not need to be raised when you choose to have your floor heating infilled. With underfloor heating, the specialist makes trenches in the cement screed where the pipes and tubes are placed. These slots are approximately 17 millimetres deep. This can be done on an existing concrete or tiled floor. The advantages of milling in are:

  • When milling in, the heating pipes are placed in your existing screed. This is easier than demolishing the entire screed and laying it again
  • The heating time is short because the heating pipes are positioned fairly directly under your floor.
  • Your floor is ready for finishing immediately after installation
  • You can use it as both main and auxiliary heating heating

Mat underfloor heating

If your cement screed is in poorer condition, mat underfloor heating is a smart choice. Mats have a lower output because they are further from the surface. Mats are, therefore, better suited to heating rooms that are not always occupied; for example, floor heating in the bathroom. Mats are also suitable for your living room, only in this case, your entire floor has to come out. Underfloor heating mats can be placed directly under your floor. Other advantages of mats are:

  • Little to no heat is lost. The mats have insulation on the underside
  • Good cheaper to buy
Properties Inmilling Mats
Costs Higher efficiency, in the long run, milling is the cost-effective choice. £25 cheaper per 10m2.
Suitable for Floor heating as main or additional heating. Floor heating as additional heating.
Isolation Your floor retains its insulation value. The mats have insulation on the underside, so your floor is well insulated immediately.
Installation Easy installation More intensive installation, your screed has to come out.
Heating time Faster heating time, distance to the floor is shorter. Something slower heating time, distance to the floor is longer.

Choice 3. Traditional hot water underfloor heating or electric

Traditional hot water underfloor heating has two popular types:

  1. Traditional hot water underfloor heating.
  2. Electric underfloor heating.

Traditional hot water underfloor heating

The advantage of traditional underfloor heating is that it is an excellent conductor of heat, which means you use less energy. Traditional underfloor heating consists of pipes through which hot water flows. The water-fed heating is connected to a central heating system or a heat pump. Infills or mats are ways of installing traditional underfloor heating. Both underfloor heating as additional heating and main heating is possible.

Electric underfloor heating

The advantage of electric underfloor heating is that it is cheaper to buy and provides heat quickly in small rooms. Electric floor heating works with mats in which glowing wires are milled. These mats are located under the floor and are easy to install. Electric underfloor heating is only used as additional heating.

Properties Warm water underfloor heating Electric underfloor heating
Average cost Average £200 more expensive to purchase and install. Good purchase price and installation.
Suitable for All rooms. Small rooms, such as the hallway, toilet and or bathroom.
Quality of heat Very pleasant heat. Given heat is less gradual and even.
Low energy consumption. Higher energy consumption.
Heat-up time Longer heat-up time. Short heat-up time.
Installation More intensive installation, pipes must be placed on the floor. Easy to install.

Extra options with underfloor heating

Do you get the most out of your underfloor heating project? If so, consider the following interesting options:

Extra options for underfloor heating Average price per extra option (including materials, installation) Explanation
Pump switch £ 65 – £ 100 Floor heating has a pump that flows the water through the pipes. This pump is often running 24/7 while the heating is not on. With a pump switch, you save energy because the pump is only on when the central heating system is running.
Isolation foil £ 1 (per m2) Insolation foil is placed under the underfloor heating so you do not lose heat unnecessarily through the subfloor.
Removal of radiators £ 20 – £ 30 Directly have the old radiators removed and disposed of by the specialist.
Mount a bypass valve £ 45 – £ 70 A bypass valve is an extra safety measure to prevent the pressure in the pipes from rising too high.
