underfloor heating living room

First of all, you have a choice between electric underfloor heating or traditional underfloor heating connected to a central heating system. Both have their own advantages and disadvantages. Traditional underfloor heating is more reliable and energy-efficient than electric underfloor heating, and for this reason traditional underfloor heating is much more commonly used in living rooms.

If you choose traditional underfloor heating, have the project carried out by a recognised specialist. That way you keep the chances of a leak or faulty installation as low as possible. You obviously want to avoid having to reopen the floor afterwards. Traditional underfloor heating is connected to a central heating system. Depending on the size of your living room, a number of groups of pipes are laid according to a certain pattern. The closer the pipes are to each other, the better the heating in the living room will be. That means you need to know whether the underfloor heating in your living room is meant as main heating or just for warm feet. In the latter case, the pipes are placed a bit further apart and it is called a supplementary or comfort heating. The distance the pipes are spaced apart is called ‘centre-to-centre’ (H.O.H.) distance. The overview below shows the average prices for installing underfloor heating.

Priciest:
You have a reasonably small living room (up to 20 m2) and you decide to fit it with traditional underfloor heating as a supplementary heating system. This means leaving a number of radiators in the living room to provide full heat to the room. The underfloor heating is only for warm feet. For an underfloor heating as additional heating up to 20 m2 , you can calculate around £ 750 to £ 825 including materials, installation, VAT and any milling work.

Average:
You have an average living room of 30 m2 to 75 m2 in which you want to install underfloor heating. The underfloor heating serves as extensive supplementary heating, as there are only a small number of radiators. In this case, the underfloor heating contributes to heating the entire living room. For this project, factor in an average cost of £850 to £1,260 including materials, installation, VAT and any milling work.

Luxury:
You have a spacious house with a living room larger than 60 m2 and you decide to provide it with underfloor heating as main heating. The H.O.H. distance should then be about 10 cm to completely heat the room. A project like this costs an average of £1,400 to £1,865 including materials, installation, VAT and any milling work.

Do you have radiators or debris that needs to be removed? Then the tiler or installer will charge disposal costs. With most specialists, this is included in the price, but always ask about this in advance.

What choices will affect the underfloor heating price in the living room?

Choice 1: Main heating, extensive supplementary heating or auxiliary heating
Do you have radiators in your living room? Then a high pipe intensity is not necessary and you should always opt for a supplementary heating like underfloor heating. An additional heating for an area of 20 m2 therefore costs the same as a main heating for an area of 10 m2. For the same piece of surface area, the difference in price can be as much as £700.

Choice 2: Electric or traditional underfloor heating
Electric underfloor heating is a bit cheaper to install than traditional underfloor heating. This is because you can easily do this project yourself. However, the consumption costs of these electric mats are higher than if you opt for traditional heating. Despite the fact that traditional underfloor heating is pricier to purchase, you will benefit from the lower consumption costs in the long run.

Choice 3: Additional options
When installing traditional underfloor heating there are a number of additional options that can affect the overall price. The overview below shows these options. The prices all include materials, installation and VAT.

Extra options milling in traditional underfloor heating Average price per extra option (including materials, assembly and VAT) Explanation
Pump switch £ 65 – £ 100 Every underfloor heating system has a pump to move the water through the pipes. These pumps are often running 24/7 while the heating is not always on. A pump switch brings energy savings by eliminating the need for the pump to run full-time.
Connecting to district heating £ 75 If the house is heated by district heating, connecting the underfloor heating is slightly more complex. The installer often charges extra for this.
Removal of radiators £ 20 – £ 30 Removal and removal of old radiators.
Mounting a bypass valve £ 45 – £ 70 A bypass valve allows the flow to the boiler to run more smoothly and prevents overloading the pump.
