Bespoke window frames

What material choices do you have when ordering bespoke window frames?

The materials you choose when ordering your bespoke window frames affect the price, lifespan and the degree of insulation the window frame provides. You can choose from four different types of materials: plastic, aluminium, wood or steel.

Plastic window frames

Plastic window frames are the most economical window frames. This is because this raw material is cheaper and the production process is largely automated. The plastic window frames prices for completely renovating a terraced house are on average around £15,000 to £20,000.

Plastic is made of PVC, a durable and recyclable material. These window frames are easy to maintain, as wiping them once in a while with a damp cloth is sufficient. In addition, you can give the window frames the look you want. Plastic window frames can be fitted in almost all RAL colours and you can have them finished with a wood grain structure to give them a wood look.

Aluminium window frames

Aluminium window frames, just like plastic, are sturdy, easy to maintain and durable. Yet they also have some differences. Aluminium is not electrostatic, so it attracts less dirt, and has a smoother appearance than plastic. Aluminium window frames prices are somewhat higher compared to plastic. On average, you will spend £18,000 to £22,000 to completely renew the window frames in a terraced house.

Wooden window frames

Do you like a warm authentic look? Then take a look at wooden window frames. These window frames are comparable to aluminium window frames in terms of price. The complete renovation of a terraced house costs around £17,000 to £24,000, depending on the type of wood.

Wooden window frames come in hardwood and softwood. Hardwood is more expensive, but lasts up to 75 years on average. Softwood is a lot cheaper in comparison, but has an average lifespan of 20 years. Here you can weigh up which wood suits your project best.

Steel window frames

Steel window frames have a tough and industrial look, but can also look very elegant due to the slim and sleek profiles. It is a strong material with a long lifespan. On average, steel window frames last for more than 50 years. In addition, steel window frames are maintenance-free, burglar-proof and available in all RAL colours.

Steel window frames are more expensive than the other materials because there is less demand for them and therefore less production. On average, you will pay £18,000 to £26,000 to completely refurbish a terraced house.

Choose HR++ glass

To get the most out of your new window frames, it is important that you choose insulating glass. Insulating glass includes double glazing, HR+, HR++ and triple glazing. The most commonly chosen glass in the Netherlands is HR++ glass. On average, this costs £ 140 per m², including installation. This type of glass insulates better than double glazing because there is argon gas between the two glass plates instead of dry air. This allows you to save up to £ 250 per year on your energy costs.

Is there a subsidy for insulation glass?

When you have insulation glass installed, you can apply for the Sustainable Energy Investment Subsidy (ISDE) from the central government. To qualify for the subsidy, the project must be carried out by a specialist. You can then get up to 15% of the cost back as a subsidy. If you combine this measure with a second measure, such as new window frames, you can receive up to 30% subsidy.

To qualify for this, you must replace at least 8 m² of glass. You can then add up the number of m² of glass and window frames. You can receive a subsidy for a maximum of 45 m². Some conditions also apply to the insulation value of the glass. For HR++ glass, the U-value may not exceed 1.2 W/m2K and for triple glass it may not exceed 0.7 W/m2K.

Check out the other conditions on the website of the central government.

What are the advantages of made-to-measure window frames?

Customised window frames are accurately measured and made exactly to your requirements. See below for all the advantages that custom-made frames bring.

Determine the price yourself

When buying custom-made frames, you can decide how expensive you make it. The choice of material, glass and hardware will affect the final price. So you can also opt for renovation window frames if you don’t want to replace the entire window frames. If you want cheap window frames, you can choose the cheapest options. Just bear in mind that you do not want to save on things like insulation and lifespan, as these often do not work out cheaper in the end.

Choose the level of insulation

When you have window frames made to measure, the window frames will fit seamlessly with the façade. As a result, there will be no seams and gaps and your house will be draught-free. In addition, you determine the degree of insulation because you can choose the material yourself. Pay attention to the insulation value of the material. The lower the U-value, the better the material insulates.

Determine the colour

With made-to-measure window frames, you determine the colour of the frames yourself. This allows you to choose the colour that best suits your interior. You can also repaint the frames when you need something new. However, this does not apply to all materials. With aluminium and plastic this is a more complicated process, because the paint does not adhere easily.

Tips for ordering custom-made window frames

Request multiple quotes

To get a good idea of the prices for your project, you can request window frame quotes. Compare the quotes of the various specialists on the basis of prices, quality marks and guarantees and find the window frames specialist that best suits your project.

Look for quality marks

There are a number of quality marks you can look out for that guarantee the quality of the specialist. Below are some examples of quality marks you could look out for.

The KOMO quality mark guarantees that window frames are of good quality and professionally installed. With the Politiekeurmerk Veilig Wonen, the burglar resistance of the window frame is checked. So you can feel safe in your own home.

There are also a number of quality marks that apply specifically to certain materials, such as the VKG quality mark for plastic window frames that guarantees quality and durability. Or the FSC quality mark for wooden window frames. This ensures that the wood comes from responsibly managed forests.
